Supple is powered by what we believe is the world’s most
advanced social-interaction Artificial Intelligence (AI). The
AI in Supple enables the computer-controlled characters in the
game to compete with human players in a richly textured social
environment, making moment-to-moment decisions based on a knowledge
of human behavior and a sophisticated understanding of unique
and unusual game situations.
For example, we might find Hugh in the office with Arin, the
player’s character, and Margot, their boss. Hugh and Margot
are both controlled by the AI. Let’s say the player orders
Arin to flirt with Hugh. Hugh must decide whether to flirt back
or act cold. He (that is, Hugh’s AI) must weigh a
large number of factors. Will Margot be jealous if he flirts
with Arin? That depends on what Hugh’s relationship is
with Margot. On the other hand how upset will Arin be if he acts
cold? If Arin is really hot for Hugh, sloughing her off at this
juncture won’t do much harm. But if the relationship is
fragile he has to be careful. Hugh wants both Arin and Margot
to like, respect and desire him but this situation calls for
a delicate and tactful balancing act, based both on his own feelings
(that is, the AI’s ‘feelings’) and his possibly
flawed understanding of what the other characters feel about
him. Hugh manages. Not perfectly, but humanly, in a lifelike
and believable manner.
This ability of the AI to deal with complex emotional social
situations is what sets Supple apart from all other
games and what makes Supple such a fascinating, human-scale world
to play in.
